Academics

Academic Excellence at Gold Reef Private School

At Gold Reef Private School, we deliver a strong academic foundation through a dynamic and engaging curriculum. Our focus on innovation, critical thinking, and personalized learning ensures every learner is prepared to thrive in the modern world.

Foundation Phase
(Grade R–3)

In the Foundation Phase, we lay the groundwork for lifelong learning by focusing on core subjects like Home Language, First Additional Language, Mathematics, and Life Skills. Learners are continuously assessed throughout the year to support steady progress and identify individual needs.
Our approach goes beyond academics — we nurture the social, personal, intellectual, emotional, and physical development of each child. With small class sizes, caring teachers, and a safe, supportive environment, we help young learners build confidence, curiosity, and a love for learning. We believe that strong foundations lead to bright futures — and we are committed to helping every child thrive.

Intermediate Phase
(Grade 4–6)

In the Intermediate Phase, learners continue to grow in independence and responsibility as they build on the strong foundations laid in the Foundation Phase. All instruction is delivered in English (Home Language), and we follow the national CAPS curriculum set out by the South African Department of Education. Afrikaans is offered as the First Additional Language.
Learners are assessed across a broad range of subjects, with a focus on academic development, critical thinking, and holistic growth. Evaluation subjects include:

• English (Home Language)
• Afrikaans (First Additional Language)
• Mathematics
• History
• Geography
• Natural Sciences & Technology
• Life Skills

We are committed to equipping learners with the knowledge, values, and confidence they need to succeed both inside and outside the classroom.

Senior Phase
(Grade 7)

Grade 7 marks the beginning of the Senior Phase and serves as an important bridge between primary and high school. At this stage, learners are encouraged to think more critically, work more independently, and take greater responsibility for their learning.
All instruction is delivered in English (Home Language), with Afrikaans as the First Additional Language, and the curriculum follows the CAPS guidelines set out by the South African Department of Education. Subjects offered in Grade 7 include:

• English (Home Language)

Testing and
Assessment

At Gold Reef Private School, we use a balanced and developmentally appropriate approach to assessment across all phases.
Foundation Phase (Grade R–3) Learners are continuously assessed throughout the year through classwork, observations, and informal tasks. The focus is on individual progress, understanding of concepts, and overall development rather than high-stakes testing. Intermediate Phase (Grade 4–6) Assessment includes a combination of classwork, homework, projects, group work, tests, and formal exams. These marks contribute to the learner’s final promotion mark, with continuous assessment playing a key role in tracking progress and identifying support needs. Senior Phase (Grade 7) In Grade 7, learners follow a more structured assessment model that includes both continuous assessment and formal examinations. Class activities, projects, and regular tests are conducted throughout the year, with a final exam written at the end of the academic year to prepare learners for high school expectations.Learners in Grade 7 Continuous Assessment is used for assessment as well as an exam at the end of the year.
