Homework

Homework

This is an important part of the learner’s education and learners are expected to do it diligently. Work conditions at home should be conducive to study. Learners should have a desk with privacy, no noise and good light. Parents may assist by supervising, but should refrain from actually doing the homework or project.

Homework Guidelines

Homework is an important part of reinforcing what has been taught in class. It helps learners build independence, responsibility, and good study habits.

Homework is given from Monday to Thursday and should be completed daily as follows:

  • Grade 1–3: ± 45 minutes

  • Grade 4–5: ± 1 hour

  • Grade 6–7: ± 1½ hours

Homework Diaries

All learners from Grade 1 to 7 are issued with a school diary at the beginning of each year. This diary must be kept up to date and used to record daily homework.

Parental role:

  • Parents are kindly requested to sign the diary each day once homework is completed.

  • The diary serves as a communication tool between the school and parents, and includes:

    • School rules

    • Notices

    • Merit/demerit records

Foundation Phase (Grade 1–3)

Homework in the Foundation Phase is an extension of classroom learning and usually includes:

  • Reading practice

  • Phonics

  • Mathematics tasks

  • (Grade 3 only) Basic dictionary work

While it may not be lengthy, homework is expected daily.

Grade 4–7

Homework in the Intermediate and Senior Phases includes daily tasks for:

  • English

  • Afrikaans

  • Mathematics

In addition, learners receive homework in cultural subjects (such as History, Geography, Creative Arts, etc.) to prepare for the following week’s lessons.

Parental Support

We encourage parents to:

  • Create a quiet, distraction-free homework routine

  • Stay engaged with the diary and school communications
